When the theme of the next tasting was announced as “Sauvignon Blanc, any style, from anywhere,” I let out a sigh. It’s a grape I haven’t been kind to. Making shitty memes about its cat-pee, grassy reputation for a cheap laugh. I don’t spend a lot of money on wine anymore. Anything over $35 retail feels irresponsible. With my senior pet’s vet bills, rising grocery prices, and no more samples or industry discounts, wine has become a frivolous treat. White wine is what I drink most of the time, probably because where I live is a humid hellhole most of the year. Full-bodied reds at my place just collect dust, waiting for a rare day under 85°F. Sauvignon Blanc used to be a go-to, but now I usually reach for something like Albariño, Silvaner, or Muscadet. Why is that? Why have I shied away from our sunny friend, Sauvy B?
I was on a mission to find an answer. I checked my dwindling supply of wine… no Sauvignon Blanc. So I stopped by one of my favorite local wine shops, Sobremesa (who, excitingly, just got a shop page up online). Spotted a Sauvignon Blanc that looked interesting and under $30. WOO! So I Lyfted to the shop, then to the tasting, and was ready to embrace the all Sauvy B with arms wide open.
