Thank you so much for sharing in so much detail! I'm from just outside of Syracuse - no longer live in the region - but every time I go back I try to make at least a day trip to the Finger Lakes to explore new places. Some wineries you visited are some of my FAVES! but some I haven't personally gotten to explore yet, so I'm excited to take from your notes and put them on my itinerary the next time! Having grown up drinking a lot of the local wines, I've found myself to appreciate the region much more and over the last few years really hold them to high standing with other wines produced in the US - maybe that to some degree that does have to do with more favorable climate shifts, or just people producing better shit, or the fact that I have a more developed palate - either way, I'm 1000% here for FLX wines! Besides Riesling (bc duh), was there a particular "holy shit" wine that stood out to you as something you didn't expect to be represented as well as it was from the region? Or anything in particular that excited you thats happening in the region?
p.s. you are not wrong about the Wegman's obsession - it really is the best.
Hard to think of a specific wine that stood out because we tasted so many. I struggle with picking favorites. I will say, I am a fan of a lot of the Cabernet Franc, Lemberger/Blaufränkisch, bubbles, and rosé we tasted. What excited me the most was the unique hybrid grapes and the styles of wines being made from these grapes. It's something I'd like to explore further.
FLX is a great place to be a wine explorer and try a variety of different things :) And I love that.
That trip sounded like an amazing experience - thanks for sharing. I almost felt like I was there with your detailed descriptions. On another note , I wish I WAS there !!!!!!
